Work begins on Moseley Road Baths

The first phase of works on the restoration of one of the UK’s oldest Grade II* listed swimming baths is due to begin this month.

We are working alongside architects Donald Insall Associates on the redevelopment of the Moseley Road Baths and Balsall Heath Library in Birmingham. The Edwardian building is currently on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk register.

This first phase of the project will be in four stages, beginning with crucial roof and façade works, which will see scaffolding erected in September.

This phase will also see:

  • Introduction of a café into the Second-Class Slipper Baths
  • Reconfiguration of the visitor spaces, especially in the reception areas
  • Reinforcement works to the basement and foundations
  • Installation of renewable energy including air source heat pumps
  • Access improvements, including creating permanent level access on entry and installation of the first of three new lifts to the buildings

We are providing MEP Engineering, Sustainability Consultancy and Acoustics for this project.

This current phase follows months of public engagement, including widespread consultation locally through drop-in sessions as well as feedback from national organisations and industry experts. Four pilot activities took place last year as a platform for community feedback — made possible through a grant of £477K from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

"Moseley Road Baths is a beautiful building that we have been involved with over a long period of time, starting with reviewing how we might take it off the ancient steam boilers that still heat the pool. We're really excited to see this stunning community building restored and upgraded to make it fit for generations to come and take major steps towards becoming net zero carbon."
